The NASA Lewis Research Center has sponsored the development of a number of related analytical/computational capabilities for the finite element analysis program, NASTRAN. This development is based on a unified approach to representing and integrating the structural, aerodynamic, and aeroelastic aspects of the static and dynamic stability and response problems of turbomachines.
AIRLOADS was developed as part of this overall effort. It can be used as a stand-alone program, or also as a NASTRAN pre-processor, to determine the oscillatory airloads distributions on the blades of turbosystems. Generally non-uniform steady inflow fields and uniform flow fields arbitrarily inclined at small angles with respect to the turbosystem axis of rotation are considered as the sources of aerodynamic excitation.
When used as a pre-processor to NASTRAN, the program also generates both Case Control and Bulk Data Deck card image files for direct inclusion in NASTRAN
response analysis. Selected program output also facilitates the modal flutter analysis of turbosystems in NASTRAN. Single- and counterrotating advanced turboprops with highly swept blades, and axial flow compressors and turbines are examples of turbosystems that can be analyzed using AIRLOADS.
The aerodynamic model of the swept or unswept blade on a cyclically symmetric rigid or flexible hub or disk is spanned by a number of nonintersecting chords. Each chord is subdivided into a number of grid points from the leading edge to the trailing edge. The airloads are calculated at each of these grid points in terms of components directed along the displacement coordinate system axes at the grid point.
Subsonic and supersonic two-dimensional cascade unsteady aerodynamic theories are utilized to generate the applied airloads on the blade. Airloads for cascades with transonic relative inflows are linearly interpolated or extrapolated.
AIRLOADS carries the NASA case number LEW-14947. It was originally released as part of the NASA COSMIC collection.
